2010 Inaugural Ride

The First Greg Krause Memorial Helmet Fund – Helmet Drive was a huge success. On May 10, 2010 at six of Harford County Public Libraries, (Bel Air, Abingdon, Aberdeen, Havre de Grace, Edgewood & Joppa) we were able to give out 191 helmets! Along with the free helmet, children were instructed on the proper way to wear a helmet and the reason why we all should wear our bike helmet.

The excitement of each and every child was unbelievable. Every child was not only excited to be given the gift of a bike helmet, they were eager and willing to learn and ask questions regarding bike safety.

Thanks to the Krause family and friends who generously donated to the Greg Krause Memorial Helmet Fund, The Harford County Public Library system for hosting and promoting the “Be Safe, Bike Safe” event, Patricia W. Fielder, Rideshare Coordinator Harford Commuter Assistance Program & The Harford County Department of Community Services for also promoting the event, Chesapeake Cycle & Sport, Lutherville Bike Shop, Bicycle Connection (Express), Conte’s Bike Shop, Specialized & Fuji for contributions of Helmets and special discounts for purchase of the helmets. Gen-Spec for their generous donation of bright neon green “Be Safe-Bike Safe” wrist bands. A huge thank you to all our volunteers who generously gave their time and knowledge to the children. We would not have been able to do this without all of you!

We were able to raise 215 helmets. Of those we gave 191 during the library program. The remaining 24 helmets were donated to Upper Chesapeake Health Community Outreach program. These helmets will be given to children who participate in local bicycle Rodeos hosted by our local law enforcement agencies.

With 215 helmets being raised this year, our goal for next year will surely exceed this. The Greg Krause Memorial Helmet Fund Committee is looking forward to working hand in hand with our local law enforcement and UCH-Community Outreach to bring the importance of bicycle safety to all of our children of Harford County.
